Relation Between the Geographical Distribution of Amazon Warehouses and Population Density of Connecticut

Image: Population Density Map of Connecticut (source)

As a general rule, Amazon builds its facilities in the most populated areas of any state. However, when it comes to Connecticut, we can see a few exceptions. Here, the company focused on expanding its footprint to every corner of the state while also covering the most populated counties. Here are more details:

  • South-Central Connecticut: Both New Haven and Middlesex are located in this section near the Connecticut River and coast. While New Haven is a more developed area, Middlesex is mostly known for its rural woodlands.
  • Central Connecticut: With the highest number of Amazon warehouses, Hartford County stands at the heart of Connecticut. It’s the commercial hub of the state with both city and rural areas.
  • Southwestern Connecticut: On this side of the state, stands Fairfield County with some of the state’s largest cities of Connecticut such as Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk, and Danbury.
  • Northeastern Connecticut: Although the population density of the northeastern County of Windham is among the lowest, the diverse land inventory potential of the area is attracting new investors including Amazon.

More About the Top 5 Amazon Warehouses in Connecticut

Now, let’s talk about the warehouse locations, distribution, and worker benefits in detail. Here’s what you need to know about some of the most notable warehouses in Connecticut:

1. Amazon Fulfillment Center, Hartford County – BDL4

Address: 1215 Kennedy Rd, Windsor, CT 06095, United States

Opened in 2023, the BDL4 fulfillment center is the largest Amazon warehouse in Connecticut. The warehouse stands on a massive 3.8 million square feet of land and started with 2,000 employees. During the holiday seasons, the number of workers tops 3,500.

From the Bradley International Airport, the BDL4 warehouse is only 10 minutes away. It connects to the I-91 highway to easily access Hartford and neighboring cities. Other major roads near the facility include Day Hill Rd and Kennedy Rd.

On average, regular employees of the BDL4 facility earn around $16 per hour. Although the pay rate is pretty high, there was a protest outside the warehouse demanding higher pay and a safer environment.

2. Amazon Fulfillment Center, Middlesex County – BDL6

Address: 120 County Line Dr, Cromwell, CT 06416, United States

To handle large and extra-large orders, Amazon built the BDL6 fulfillment center in Cromwell. Opened in 2020, the 400,000-square-foot facility is the only Amazon warehouse in Middlesex County.

In this state-of-the-art facility, more than 200 employees pick, process, store, and ship your packages with the help of modern technologies and automated machines.

The type of products handled in the warehouse include exercise equipment, furniture, kayaks, mattresses, etc. Here, full-time employees can earn $17 to $21 per hour.

For easy access to the cities, the warehouse is strategically located near the intersection of County Line Dr and Shunpike Rd (CT-3). As it’s a fully industrial area, the traffic doesn’t bother the daily lives of the locals.

3. Amazon Distribution Center, New Haven County – DCY9

Address: 48 Boston Post Rd, Orange, CT 06477, United States

There’s only one Amazon warehouse in Orange City – the DCY9 distribution center. Combining the warehouse building and its parking lot, the structure stands on a 264,000 square feet area.

It has more than 100 employees including warehouse associates and truck drivers. For the new employees, the hourly pay rate starts at $15 to $17.

As the facility is located on the Boston Post Rd (US-1), trucks from the warehouse can easily make their way through New Haven and Bridgeport. It also connects to the I-95 highway that’s only 5 minutes away.

Unfortunately, the neighborhood is a mix of residential and commercial areas. Hence, the big trucks loaded with Amazon packages often cause traffic. Many residents complained about the irresponsible drivers not abiding by the traffic laws.

4. Amazon Delivery Station, Fairfield County – DOB4

Address: 600 Long Beach Blvd, Stratford, CT 06615, United States

From the fulfillment and distribution centers in Fairfield and nearby counties, packages arrive in the DOB4 delivery station for faster last-mile deliveries.

In this 200,000-square-foot facility, most employees are drivers who carry the packages from the warehouse to the delivery addresses. Depending on their positions, employees enjoy an hourly rate of $15 to $22.

To facilitate faster arrival of the orders, the warehouse was built close to major highways like I-95, Route 25, and Route 8. It covers many cities and towns of both Fairfield and New Haven counties. If you take a traffic-free route, you can get to the facility in 7 minutes.

5. Amazon Distribution Center, Windham County

Address: 137 Lathrop Rd, Plainfield, CT 06374, United States

Expanding its footprint in Windham, Amazon built a new distribution center in the northeastern part of Connecticut. The only major intersection near the warehouse is the I-395 which connects it to the other notable transposition routes of the state.

As the warehouse is still having issues with its development and logistics, it’s not fully functional yet. However, it stands on a 202,044 square foot area and will soon hire 200 new employees.

Workers at the distribution center will get a minimum hourly pay rate of $15. From the city downtown, it only takes 5 minutes to drive to the warehouse.
